Waikato Biodiversity Forum

The next Waikato Biodiversity Forum is to be held

on Monday 23 May 2005 from 9.15am -3pm in the Auditorium,

Whangamata War Memorial Hall, Port Road , Whangamata

 Directions:-

Port Road is the main road going into Whangamata. The Hall is on the right hand side of the road beside RSA and opposite the Garden Motor Lodge.

This hui is an opportunity for you to:-

  • support the work of community groups and agencies in the Coromandel
  • meet with others who undertake biodiversity related work
  • discuss Forum projects
  • hear presentation on mangrove habitat and visit a mangrove area
  • hear presentation on the challenges of coastal subdivision and threatened plant species on the Peninsula
  • get updated on projects that are happening on the Peninsula
  • discuss and take home tips useful for restoration projects.

Funding: Alan White, Manager Biodiversity Condition and Advice Fund will be available during the day to meet with groups to discuss funding options.

Agenda for the Day

9.15am Meet at the Centre and have morning tea.

9.45am Mihi/Introductions and setting the scene for the day.

10.00am Presentation from Hauraki Maori Trust Board and local tangata whenua on biodiversity projects.

10.30am Short updates from community groups and agencies on biodiversity projects including Beachcare, Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve , the Peninsula Project and others.

11. 00am Update on Forum projects.

11.15 There are 2 concurrent sessions to choose from in an area of interest.

1. The challenges to biodiversity of coastal subdivision. Presentation and discussion lead by Hamish Kendal Ecologist and North Waikato Representative, QEII National Trust.

2. Protecting endangered plant species of the Coromandel. Presentation and discussion lead by Andrea Brandon, DOC.

11.45am Presentation: Challenges to valuing and maintaining mangrove and estuarine habitat. Mal Green, NIWA.

12.15pm Field trip to a mangrove area with lunch on the beach (if fine) near a beachcare project. Please bring your own lunch. Bring walking boots/shoes and wet weather jacket.

1.30pm Short competition to win an undisclosed prize.

1.35pm Funding for community group projects - Alan White, Manager Biodiversity Condition and Advice Fund . Alan will be available to meet with groups at other times during the day for funding advice.

1.40pm Open Forum discussion of issues raised in the morning sessions or throughout the day.

2.50pm Feedback from Forum members.

3.00pm End of meeting and afternoon tea.

 Displays at Forum . Please feel free to set up displays at the Forum. They are a welcome addition to the interest of the day.

If you would like to give a verbal update on your groups activities and achievements at the Forum meeting please indicate the following points which you will highlight in your update and return the form by email or post (see addresses above).
