Seagull Centre Trust progress

TCPS's push for a recycle shop at Thames is nearly there. The Seagull Centre Trust last month signed a lease agreement with the Thames Coromandel district Council and the site has been fenced. A building agreement  has been signed and a resource consent applied for.
Construction should be underway in June.

Background

A charitable trust to establish a recycling shop at the Thames Transfer Station was formed following a public meeting in Thames last year. This followed an initiative by our society which gained the support of our District Council.

This followed a long battle on waste issues that goes back to 2000 with our involvement in the TCDC's Zero Waste sub-committee set up by then Deputy Mayor Sallie Christie. At that point TCPS was involved, along with the Thames Energy Futures Trust, in virtually writing the Council's zero waste policy. Then politics moved on, Sally left council and the waste wheels of council ground to a virtual halt until a new waste contractor was appointed last year.

Councillor, and TCPS committee member, Peter Wood, proposed setting up a recycling shop at the Thames transfer station. In April, 2004, Council approved the concept and voted a seeding grant of $50,000.
