Watchdog barking mad at Mining Review!Coromandel Watchdog of Hauraki is wide awake and busy mustering support from the masses of holiday-makers thronging the peninsula at present to face the renewed threat from mining to the peninsula. The Minister of Energy, Gerry Brownlee, announced in August a review of Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act (No. 2) 1997 which currently prohibits mining on Coromandel coastal and conservation land and most islands north of the Kopu-Hikuai Road. Public consultation on the review will occur in February. The 1997 Act, passed by the then National Goverment with cross party support, was a direct response to the efforts in the late 1970's and 1980s of local communities and environmental groups battling prospecting and mining applications over most of the Coromandel. Minister Brownlee seems determined to betray the response of the previous National Government to the needs of the Coromandel community. The Thames Coast Protection Society was formed in 1987 out of those battles and is providing support to Coromandel Watchdog through funding a Coordinator and other costs over this critical period for the peninsula. in the twelve years of peace the 1997 Act brought Coromandel communities Watchdog has had a low profile whilst pursuing other protection through 'Prohibited Activity' status for mining through the council's long term 10 year plan cumulating in a Court of Appeal victory last year with the assistance of EDS, Environmental Protection Society. Not a good idea to wake the dog Gerry! |
